Packing Tips and Outfit Ideas for the Beach

Typically when I pack for vacation, I tend to over pack.  I decided this time around that I would be very deliberated in what I packed so as not to over pack, and I made notes along the way to share with you.  Plus, I’m 35 this year, so that left me in a sort of conundrum of what to wear at the beach to be cute, cool, and comfy, but also age-appropriate. Here’s a look at what I came up with and some tips for packing light for that week at the beach.

1)  Lay it all out, try it on, and match it up to
avoid over packing

2 swimsuits, 1 cover up (will take two next time), flip flops (Old Navy), and visor instead of hat because it folds smaller

Dress for dinner: gold sandals (Walmart), white maxi dress (Venus), jewelry

Dress for dinner: brown sandals (Kohl’s), dress (Target), jewelry

Casual outfit: chambray denim shorts (White House Black Market), cream lace one-shoulder top (Rue 21), jewelry, gold sandals (Walmart)

Casual outfit: white shorts (Ann Taylor Loft), peach top (TJMaxx), gold sandals (Walmart), jewelry

Casual outfit: denim shorts (Ann Taylor Loft), hot pink top (TJMaxx), gold sandals (Walmart), jewelry

Casual outfit: orange shorts (Ann Taylor Loft), cream top (TJMaxx), brown sandals (Kohl’s), turquoise necklace

Airport clothes (I actually packed two sets of this same outfit): capri pants (Under Armour), top (Nike), tennis shoes
I also packed a fleece pullover for the airport and plane.
2) Use Vera Bradley lunch box for makeup, meds, and
hair products.  I love the size of these lunch boxes, and they are easy to wipe out! (If I were going to carry this bag on, I would just put my liquids in a plastic bag inside of this.)
3) Keep “mashables” safe and organized with containers.  Store make up brushes in a toothpaste container. I came up with this idea because one time when I traveled my brushes shifted around and the ends got bent, and I couldn’t get them back no matter what I tried. I don’t have a case for the brushes, or I would use that. So, if you’re like me, and just have a few brushes you use and no case, the cheap toothbrush holder does the trick! Another mashable is bras.  It never fails that my bras get smashed and creased in transit. I recently found a cute storage container for them on Jane.com, and I love how it worked this time! Undies fit, too!

4) Remember your foldable beach bag and dirty laundry bag. Once I get to the beach, I like to have an extra bag to carry my towels, books, sunscreen, etc. So when packing, I just use a foldable one that fits in the bag without taking up space. I also carry along a dirty clothes bag (mesh with drawstring), which makes washing and sorting when I got home much easier and faster! As a wear an outfit on the trip, I put it in the bag instead of back in the suitcase or hotel floor.

5) My Vera Bradley purse doubles a tote for wallet, phones,
tablets, snacks, books, camera, etc.

Everything I took fits into a carry-on size luggage bag plus one personal item! I used a medium-sized Vera Bradley tote, but you could easily upgrade to one of the VB large totes for more room and carry that on as well! Here’s how it all adds up:

If you’re making your way to the beach this summer, congrats! Kick back and enjoy!

We leave Sunday for a week at the beach (driving, not flying). I'm amazed that you fit so much into such a small bag! Think I need to reassess my choices!

Hi Theresa! I think the trick was to lay it all out and match it up! I even packed them as matches. Next time I will replace one of the dressier casual shorts outfits for a more casual workout/sightseeing type outfit I could wear with my tennis shoes. But all in all, it fit and I had plenty to wear and mix and match. I hope you have a great time at the beach!!
